Cedar Run Song Workshops: General Info

"Campus Life"

(Please click here.)
The atmosphere during Cedar Run's summer week of workshops is informal, friendly, and energizing. Classes are taught by supportive and engaging staff members who take their responsibilities seriously and who reflect the best of the art of teaching. Meals offer great food and time for socializing. The pace of the day is designed to be reasonable and relaxed. There is a half hour between classes in the morning and afternoon blocks, as well as a long stretch at lunch time which allows for a pleasant meal and a nap or some quiet writing time between morning and afternoon classes. For those who want to spend this time in a more physically active way, the SevenOaks campus features a swimming hole (no lifeguards, though), and lots of space to walk (the Rapidan River borders the campus), put together impromptu games, or just hang out in the sunshine or shade, depending on your preference.
In the evenings, after dinner, we have our staff concerts, called "staff sets." In each one, two of our instructors will perform for a half-hour apiece. This affords us a great opportunity to see our staff instructors practicing their performing art in an intimate and comfortable space. During and after the staff sets, the Cedar Run Boutique will offer the opportunity to buy CD's, songbooks, DVD's, and the like from our staff members, as well as Cedar Run t-shirts and other program paraphernalia. (Refrigerator magnets, anyone?)
On a couple of evenings, we'll also have student open mics after the staff sets which will offer everyone a chance to get up and share some music with the group in a setting that offers a sound system and a concert feel.
Later, the evenings are given over to informal song circles in which students share music informally in round-robin fashion in different locations around the campus. Performers and listeners are both very welcome at open mics and song circles.
